Former Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday, before conceding New Hampshire’s primary and heading off to South Carolina’s, said he refuses to believe that a Democrat can’t beat President Donald Trump for the White House and that he believes he as a good shot in South Carolina, despite his losses in Iowa and New Hampshire.
“I refuse to suggest any Democrat can lose,” Biden told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “I think, you know, we could run Mickey Mouse against this president and have a shot.”
His comments came in response to former President Bill Clinton ally James Carville, who said on Monday that Democrats can win the White House if Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is nominated.
But Biden has put his early chances in states like South Carolina and Nevada, rather than in Iowa or New Hampshire, because of the more diverse natures of the southern state and the support of the African-American community.
“They know me, they know my heart,” of the other, larger states. “They know my head, they know what I’ve always stood up for them. They know the courage I’ve exhibited in defense of their concerns.”
But candidates Tom Steyer and Mike Bloomberg already have spent $500 million between the two of them, Biden said, and it’s “amazing” what that kind of money can do “in terms of being on the air.”
He acknowledged that the race will be tough, but he also is looking forward to debating Bloomberg about his support for African-Americans and his tenure as mayor of New York City after videos surfaced of he ex-mayor talking in defense of the controversial “stop and frisk” police policy.
He also called Sanders a “decent guy,” but his self-described democratic socialism will be a problem in the south.
Biden on Tuesday also indicated he wasn’t concerned about Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani’s plans to investigate him or his son, Hunter, concerning Ukraine.
“No one’s asserted that he’s done anything wrong, and no one’s asserted that I’ve done anything wrong,” said Biden.”When have you ever seen a sitting president spend so much time, so much money, risk so much to decide to pick somebody who he wants out of the race in the Democratic primary?”
