After Impeachment-Related Firings, Schumer Wants Answers

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wants answers after the Trump administration released several people from duty within the executive branch who were connected to the Democrats’ impeachment effort.

On the heels of the move to reassign National Security Council members Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and his twin brother Lt. Col. Yevgeny Vindman, along with the decision to recall U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, Schumer is sending letters to 74 inspectors general at government agencies. The New York Democrat would like the IGs to probe any retaliatory moves taken against government workers who report allegations of presidential misconduct, according to Politico.

For example, Schumer wrote to Glenn Fine, the acting inspector general at the Department of Defense, that the dismissal of the Vindman brothers from the NSC is “part of a dangerous, growing pattern of retaliation against those who report wrongdoing only to find themselves targeted by the president and subject to his wrath and vindictiveness.”

Alexander Vindman reported concerns last summer about Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and testified in the House impeachment inquiry, which led to Trump’s impeachment.

Schumer also wants to know whether federal workers know their whistleblower rights.

After the Vindmans were fired from the NSC, Trump attacked Alexander Vindman by calling him “very insubordinate” and said he was “given a horrendous report by his superior, the man he reported to, who publicly stated that Vindman had problems with judgment, adhering to the chain of command and leaking information. In other words, ‘OUT’.”
