NY Times: WH Official Told Whistleblower of ‘Crazy’ Trump Ukraine Call

President Donald Trump’s Ukrainian telephone call in July was “crazy,” “frightening,” and “completely lacking in substance related to national security,” according to comments from a White House official in a memo written by a whistleblower who filed a complaint about the call, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

“The official stated that there was already a conversation underway with White House lawyers about how to handle the discussion because, in the official’s view, the president had clearly committed a criminal act by urging a foreign power to investigate a U.S. person for the purposes of advancing his own re-election bid in 2020,” the whistleblower wrote, according to the Times.

The whistleblower talked to the White House official about the call, the Times disclosed, and the official was “visibly shaken by what had transpired.”

The memo was written a day after Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine, according to the report.

The complaint concerns whether Trump suggested that Zelenskiy begin an investigation into Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cited the whistleblower’s complaint in announcing last month that six committees would investigate President Trump for impeachment.

The president has repeatedly bashed the investigation as a “scam.”

According to the Times, the intelligence community’s inspector general, Michael Atkinson, gave Congress the whistleblower’s two-page memo last week.

An individual familiar with its contents described it to the Times after Fox News first reported details about the document.

Neither lawyers for the whistleblower nor a representative for Atkinson responded to requests for comment.

The whistleblower had no firsthand knowledge of the events described in the memo or complaint.

The individual said in the complaint that he had spoken to “multiple U.S. government officials” who alleged that President Trump was “using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.”

According to the Times, it was not clear whether the White House official the whistleblower spoke to July 26 was a second whistleblower who has since come forth regarding the Ukraine call.

The person has also provided information to Atkinson, or a different intelligence person, the Times reported.

Neither whistleblower’s name has been made public.
