Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., warned Thursday that President Donald Trump can be re-elected next year.
“If anyone thinks Trump can’t be re-elected, they better get another thing coming,” Reid, 79, who left office in 2017, said at a panel discussion at University of Nevada-Las Vegas, The Nevada Independent reports.
“He can be re-elected,” Reid added. “Hope to hell he isn’t.”
Reid, who was on Capitol Hill for more than three decades, said the president has “intimidated” Republicans — and the only ones speaking out are Democrats.
“I served with many Republicans who are in the Senate now,” he said at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law. “These fine men and women are doing nothing to speak out against Donald Trump.
“Now, that’s unfair to the country.
“I think that he has intimidated these good men and women and they’re afraid to say anything about him,” Reid said.
Despite President Trump’s low approval ratings — 38% in this week’s ABC News-Washington Post poll — Reid has previously warned of his very likely re-election next year.
“I’m pretty damn worried,” Reid told the Daily Beast last month. “Anybody that thinks he’s going to be beaten easily is wrong.
“As sad as it is. As hard as it is for me to say this: Don’t count that man out.”
