Barrasso: Trump Right to Cancel Taliban Talks

President Donald Trump was right to seek peace talks with Taliban leaders, and also right to cancel a planned meeting with them at Camp David, Sen. John Barrasso said Monday.

“He showed a lot of backbone and right the instincts and judgment,” the Wyoming Republican told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” “He is willing to talk to anybody. He is also willing to walk away from a bad deal and a deal with the Taliban would have been a bad deal here.”

Over the weekend, Trump said on Twitter that he’d canceled a secret meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghanistan leaders, after a bombing in Kabul killed 12 people, including a U.S. soldier. He also said he’s called off peace negotiations with the group.

Barrasso said he’s traveled to Afghanistan for two of the last three Thanksgivings to meet with troops from Wyoming, and they have told him it is better to fight terrorists “over there” than in the United States.

However, he said he doesn’t think Trump was at the level of making a deal with the Taliban, which was continuing its terrorist activities during ongoing talks with the U.S. to pull troops out of Afghanistan.

“That’s not a way to get a peace agreement,” said Barrasso. “Do we need to keep troops there? Absolutely. We still have troops on the ground in Europe in Korea 75 years later.”

Meanwhile, the senator said returning from summer recess this week seems like “split-screen television” in Washington.

“There are things that are being done to move the country ahead, (but) we’re at a time of significant polarization and conflict,” the senator said.
