Amash’s GOP Opponent Jim Lower Raises $200K

Rep. Justin Amash, I-Mich., has had a tumultuous 2019 and now his challenger for 2020 is capitalizing, raising $200,000 in just over a month after announcing his candidacy for Amash’s House seat.

Michigan GOP State Rep. Jim Lower announced the haul in the fledgling days of his candidacy via Twitter:

“Thanks to 3,161 individual contributors, our campaign raised just over $200,000 in the first 40 days! Hardworking grassroots voters support our Pro-@realDonaldTrump, Pro-Life, Pro-Jobs, Pro-2A, Pro-Family Values campaign! @GOPChairwoman @MIGOPChair @IngrahamAngle @FoxNews.”

Amash’s political cachet has taken a hit on the right after he was the first then-Republican to support impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump over the Russia investigation, which led to his withdrawing from the conservative House Freedom Caucus he was a founder of, and ultimately forcing him to leave the Republican Party altogether.

“Congressman Justin Amash just doesn’t get it,” Lower says on his campaign website VoteLower.com. “West Michigan deserves a congressman who will actually represent the values of our community and work with President Trump to get things done. I will be that Congressman.”

President Trump celebrated Amash’s departure from the GOP, calling it “great news”:

“Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is ‘quitting’ the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser!”
