Ocasio-Cortez rejects climate change compromise in thinly-veiled shot at Biden’s plan

The battle in the Democratic Party about how far left to go in efforts to counteract climate change escalated Monday when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejected compromise in an apparent reference to former Vice President Joe Biden’s proposed middle-of-the-road approach.

The comments came at a Green New Deal town hall event Monday night in Washington, D.C. Biden was a frequent target of derision from speakers, and although Ocasio-Cortez didn’t mention his name, it’s hard not to believe she was referring to the Democratic primary front runner.

“I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then come back today and say we need a ‘middle of the road’ approach to save our lives,” Ocasio-Cortez told those in attendance.

At another point during the event, Ocasio-Cortez aimed criticism at “conservatives in both parties” and responded to an audience member who yelled “no middle ground!” by saying “No middle ground is right!”

Biden was also booed when Alexandra Rojas of Justice Democrats asked the crowd what they thought of Biden’s “middle-of-the-road” climate change proposal.

The former vice president will reportedly release a moderate climate change plan soon, one that could still be friendly to fossil fuel energy sources.

From The Hill:

In crafting a more middle-ground approach to climate change, Biden is hoping to appeal to working-class voters who may be reluctant to back more extensive approaches to climate change, like the Green New Deal, which ultimately seeks to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions to net zero over a 10-year period.
