CNN: Law Firm in Mystery Subpoena Case Once Represented Russians, Republicans

A law firm that has in the past represented a Russian oligarch and the Republican Party is involved in a mysterious foreign-owned company’s attempt to avoid complying with a grand jury subpoena thought to be related to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, CNN reports.

It is not clear whether the law firm, Alston & Bird, represents the company, another interested party or the country’s regulators. The report comes a day after The Washington Post reported the mystery company is a foreign financial institution.

Last year, a federal court in Washington ordered the corporation to pay a $50,000 daily fine until it complied with the subpoena.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday left the lower-court order in place. The company has argued the subpoena to be “unreasonable and oppressive” and has claimed immunity under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

The case has been shrouded in secrecy. An entire floor of a Washington, D.C., court was sealed off last month as lawyers for each side argued in front of a judge. The identity of the witness has yet to be revealed.

CNN said two of the firm’s lawyers, Ted Kang and Brian Boone, have been spotted in recent months at federal court in Washington heading into and out of hearings for the subpoena case.

Alston & Bird represented the RNC in its effort to obtain emails from the State Department sent to and from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her aides. It also previously represented Russian Oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a business contact of Paul Manafort.
