Richard Grenell ‘a Family Favorite’ for UN Post

U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell is a leading choice to replace outgoing United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, the Washington Examiner reports.

Grenell, who became the longest-serving appointee to the UN after serving as U.S. spokesman for eight years, has been ambassador to Germany since May, 2018. According to an unnamed source familiar with the Trump Administration’s thinking, Grenell is “a family favorite” to take over for Haley at the UN.

The ambassador is a leading contender not just because of his experience with the UN. He also has a close working relationship with national security adviser, and former UN ambassador, John Bolton.

The New York Post reported in 2016 that Grenell was on President Donald Trump’s shortlist for UN ambassador before he assumed office.

Haley announced her resignation on Tuesday morning, but will stay in the post until the end of the year.

The Daily Caller reports that Grenell and former Trump administration adviser Dina Powell are the top contenders for Haley’s position.
