Trump Asks Sessions to Prosecute Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf

President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to consider prosecuting the Democratic mayor of Oakland, California, over her February heads-up to illegal immigrants about a federal enforcement raid.

Trump said Mayor Libby Schaaf’s decision to warn her constituents ahead of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid amounted to “obstruction of justice.”

The raid was expected to target more than 1,000 illegal immigrants but rounded up about 200.

“They all fled, or most of them fled – the whole operation took a long time to put together,” Trump said during a White House roundtable discussion with political leaders and law enforcement officials from California, The Hill reported.

“You talk about obstruction of justice — I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff,” the president continued. “She advises thousand people . . . ‘Get out of here, the law enforcement’s coming.’ And you worked on that long and hard, and you got there and there were very few people there.”

“Perhaps the Department of Justice can look into that, with respect to the mayor, because it’s a big deal out there, and a lot of people are very angry about what happened,” he added.

The president’s comment was the first time he has called on the nation’s top prosecutor to consider legal action against the Oakland mayor, The Hill reported.
