Analysis: US Embassy Move Makes Mideast Peace ‘More Difficult’

The Monday dedication of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem will “delight Israel and infuriate Palestinians,” according to analysis written for Axios by Israeli journalist Barak Ravid.

Trump’s campaign promises regarding Israel were the move of the embassy, and a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians, wrote Ravid of Israel’s Channel 10 news.

“Fulfilling his first promise will make it much more difficult to implement the second. Since Trump’s Jerusalem announcement in December, the Palestinians decided to cut all ties with the White House,” Ravid wrote.

However, Monday’s dedication is mostly symbolic; the only U.S. staff members that are moving to the Jerusalem embassy at the opening are Ambassador David Friedman and four staff members, Axios reported.

The opening is the beginning of a process that would take years, the report said. Meanwhile, most U.S. diplomats will still work from the Tel Aviv embassy site.

President Donald Trump’s moving of the embassy is a historical point in relations between the U.S. and Israel, Ravid wrote.

“Even if Trump does nothing else until the end of his term regarding Israel, he has already gotten himself into the history books,” Ravid wrote.

“We are seeing the implementation of a foreign policy that is really the Trump Doctrine. Seizing the moment has been a critically important part of these historic days,” Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow wrote in an email to Axios.

Israeli forces killed at least 37 Palestinians during clashes at the Gaza border Monday, CNN reported.
